The term pod has taken on new and significant importance in the most recent weeks/months of this pandemic, not having the original meaning intended by this pea. This Peas Pod referred to a very large circle of friends and work colleagues who drank copious amounts of creamy pints, celebrated Monday like an all Ireland final win and the rest of the week only got better. A pod of friendship containing characters as unique as crystals of salt, where no excuse was needed to laugh or cry and the only cross words exchanged were in the critical review of Guinness.
The New Pod – a Pea out of his Pod
Many of us now associate our pod as small, self-contained groups of people who limit their non-distanced social interaction to one another. That small group of people sharing air, free from precautions such as masks in the knowledge that we reduce the mystical R number and protect those special to us. Our Pod serves as our human contact, our inter personal release and the route to positive mental health in those darker days. This new pod which I find myself in relies heavily on social media as an outlet for feelings and emotions; this shouldn’t be taken as a negative reflection of my current podlets.
Allow me to paint a picture, an oil painting of emotion. A pea gainfully fulfilling he’s true life destiny walking the bar room boards dispensing pints, crisps and satire. The loss of this activity and outlet makes for very long days without a defined objective with exception of keeping others safe. It can be easy to lose sight of life’s positives and unfortunately as I look across my chosen trade I see a lot of sad beverage dispensers.
The Revelation……
On the eve of 2021 as I sit counting down in my pod with RTE1, podlets to the left and right, There was a distinctive ping. Just before the stroke of the New Year my work colleagues spontaneously sent greetings and photos. We couldn’t be together in the room but we were never more together.
In those few moments I have never felt so connected to my team, the Pod never got smaller or disappeared it is as strong as ever.
